| People sometimes ask disapprovingly, "Why is there so much focus on the negative and so little said about the progress?"
It is not because we enjoy the dark and miserable. And it's not that it is easier for us to talk about what is bad in our lives than about the good that we have and do.
I would have to say that "seeing the wrong" is a natural and an essential part of any being's path of evolution. Unless we can see the wrong, we will never do what is right. Unless we feel the pain of others as intense as our own pain, we will never extend a helping hand to a needy, especially when such action would endanger our lives and the lives of our loved ones.
However, the problem is not that we can not see the wrong around us, - we can see it all too well, even when it's not there. The sad reality is that we choose not to see the wrong within ourselves. That is the reason why there is so much evil around the world, for we do not feel compelled to have it stopped, at any cost. We do not feel the pain of others while living our busy lives. And only while going through the pain of our own, we can see the absence of consciousness and of genuine compassion on the part of the deaf society that we live in.
Yet, only a few at that painful moment choose to realize that neither did they seem to notice the cries of others in the past; at which point we may attempt to make a short step forward - on the path of evolution, by embracing and embedding this pain onto our very soul. This is the only reason why some people, very few, have an uncontrollable surge of pain and a sincere instinctive need to do what is possible to help, when experiencing the pain of others. While the rest will show a feigned concern or may openly profess a condemnation based on their deep religious convictions, and go about their own business. Or worse, will get involved in reformation of the problem without a sense of urgency and a genuine desire to help.
It is not easy to see a progress when there is so much carnage and suffering, and the onslaught of pain from the searing knowledge that thousands of lives: of someone's parents, children, husbands and wives - somewhere - are being destroyed, never to be mended again.
But the real reason the positive seems to be just out of my reach, is because of the clear knowledge that I'm complicit in every act of suffering that is felt through out this land and so many other parts around the world. Of course, on a positive side and, as a spiritual being, I could say that without (much) pain of our own we cannot ever progress and evolve. |
